Is Vermeil Worth It? You're Paying for Silver You'll Never See.

Vermeil is the fanciest word in demi-fine jewelry, and it describes the one part of a ring nobody will ever see.

The word is a promise about the core: sterling silver under the gold. It tells you far less about the surface, which is the part that catches the light, takes the knocks and gets the compliments. We've already laid out what each label means. This is the part where we tell you what we think.

Same gold, very different price

Read the fine print on rings from the best-known vermeil brands and the same spec keeps coming up: 2.5 microns of 18K gold. That's a good, generous layer. It's also the same thickness of 18K we put on our Heavy Gold+ rings.

The price tags are where the two part ways. At three of the best-known vermeil brands, a typical ring costs about $110 to $158. Our gold rings are $59 to $89.

So what is the extra money buying? Mostly a solid silver core. It's real metal, and once the ring is on your hand, you'll never see it again.

"But when the gold wears off, it's silver"

This is vermeil's best argument, so let's give it a fair hearing. Any gold ring worn every day eventually thins where it rubs. With vermeil, what shows through is silver.

Now picture that ring. A gold ring with silver patches still isn't the gold ring you bought. And bare silver doesn't stay bright for long: it reacts with sulfur in the air and darkens into silver sulfide, the familiar black tarnish. The backup plan turns out to be a two-tone ring that goes dark at the edges.

Silver can cause trouble even before the gold wears through. When gold is plated straight onto silver, the silver can migrate up into the gold and tarnish it, which is why platers recommend a barrier layer between the two.

So the core decides very little about how a gold ring looks on day 300. The gold layer decides that, along with whatever protects it.

The word is easy to print

Because "vermeil" sounds like a guarantee, it attracts shortcuts. Sourcify, a US manufacturing broker, lists using 1 to 2 microns "and calling it vermeil" among the factory shortcuts to watch for. "Skipping barrier layers" is on the same list. Some listings go further and describe gold-plated brass as vermeil with a straight face.

You can't spot any of that in a product photo. You can spot it in a spec, when a brand is willing to write one.

Vermeil is a word about the core. Nobody has ever complimented a core.

Where we put the money instead

We built our gold rings from the outside in. The core is brass, a metal that holds sculpted shapes and fine settings well. Before any gold goes on, a real silver barrier layer goes over it, so the gold still sits on silver and the brass stays out of it. Then come 2.5 microns of real 18K gold, a thickness comparable to well-known vermeil, and a clear protective seal over the top. The full build is on our materials page.

That leaves room in the price for the part you actually look at. Komodo is an open band with pavé on one end and a pear crystal dropping off the other. Confetti hangs five pear drops from a slim band, so it moves when you do. Succulent gathers an olive-gray pear with pink and white crystals into one small bouquet. Every stone is set by hand. Every ring comes in sizes 4 to 11, with a two-year warranty.

★★★★★

“It also looks way more expensive than it actually is. 10/10 recommend.”

And if it's silver you love, wear it where people can see it. Plenty of our designs come in solid .925 sterling silver, finished in rhodium like fine white gold. Komodo is one of them.

So, is vermeil worth it?

If a sterling silver core matters to you for its own sake, vermeil gives you that, and some of it is beautifully made. Just know what the word covers. It doesn't buy you more gold, a better design or a ring that wears differently on the surface.

Pay for the outside. It's the only part you'll ever wear.

Questions about vermeil

Is vermeil worth the extra money?

It depends on whether a sterling silver core matters to you. Well-known vermeil rings typically carry 2.5 microns of 18K gold, so compare the gold layer, what protects it and the design before paying more for the core.

Does vermeil tarnish?

The gold resists tarnish, but the silver underneath can darken. Where the gold wears thin, exposed silver can tarnish, and gold plated straight onto silver can discolor as silver moves into it. A barrier layer under the gold helps prevent that.

How thick is the gold on vermeil?

US guidelines set the vermeil minimum at 2.5 microns of gold over sterling silver, and well-known vermeil brands typically list 2.5 microns of 18K. Some pieces sold as vermeil carry less, so ask for the number.

Are Oomiay rings vermeil?

No. Our Heavy Gold+ rings have a brass core with a real silver barrier layer, then 2.5 microns of 18K gold and a clear protective seal. The gold thickness is comparable to well-known vermeil, and the rings cost $59 to $89.
