Stack of Oomiay gold rings with crystal charms

The Case for the $85 Ring

A ring can earn its price before you know anything about microns.

It might be the shape you keep going back to. The way a crystal hangs from the band. A color combination that makes the other rings in your open tabs feel a little less appealing. That first attraction matters. Jewelry is a purchase you’re meant to enjoy looking at.

Then comes the reasonable question: if a gold-plated ring can cost roughly $20, why spend $85 at Oomiay?

What we can tell you is what goes into ours, and why it matters. A design you specifically want. A substantial gold layer and a finish built in several stages. Hand-set crystals. Support that continues after checkout. Together, these give you a reason to feel good about choosing the ring that caught your eye.

The design should be one you actually prefer

Take Icicle, currently $85. Its emerald-cut white crystal has a crisp rectangular shape, suspended from a round crystal on the band. The contrast between the two cuts is lovely: a small point of sparkle above a longer, more defined drop. It looks delicate without being a plain band with a stone added to it.

That’s a specific reason to want Icicle. You like the arrangement, the proportions, the way it looks against your hand. Those things count when you’re deciding what a piece is worth to you.

We accept this easily with other purchases. Two lamps can both light a room while only one has the shape you want to live with. Two bags can carry your phone while looking entirely different with your clothes. Jewelry deserves the same consideration.

Our rings offer different reasons to fall for them. Wink gives you a layered look in one piece, with a double band and an appealing mix of smooth gold, crystal hoops and different dangling charms. It’s useful when you want something interesting on your hand without assembling a whole stack.

Bonbon takes another route. Its cluster combines pink, brown and lilac moonstone-effect crystals, with different sizes keeping the color from feeling like a uniform row. It’s a lovely way to bring color into the rings you wear regularly. You can pick up the pink with something you’re wearing, or let the combination be its own small detail against denim or a cream knit.

You might prefer one of these and barely consider the others. That’s the point. We make room for different shapes, arrangements and colors, so you can choose a ring because there’s something about it you want to keep wearing.

The finish is part of what you’re enjoying

Gold-plated describes a category, and the way that finish is built makes a difference. We give our Heavy Gold+ rings a substantial 2.5-micron layer of real 18K gold over a silver barrier on a brass base, finished with advanced sealing protection. That includes the gold versions of Icicle, Wink and Bonbon.

The gold gives the ring its rich color, and the thickness of that layer matters to how the finish wears. Underneath, silver helps the gold adhere and forms a barrier between the brass and the gold. Above it, a clear protective seal adds moisture and tarnish resistance and helps maintain a smooth finish.

Those layers are there to help your ring hold its color and shine through regular wear. We put care into what’s beneath the surface so you can keep enjoying the part you fell for.

A ring should reward a closer look as well as a flattering photo.

The small details deserve attention

Our crystals are hand-set, meaning they’re individually placed and secured.

You can see why placement matters in Bonbon. The larger pink crystal sits among smaller crystals in different colors and sizes. Their position is part of what makes the cluster appealing. On Wink, the crystal detail on one hoop sits beside smooth gold on the other, so the sparkle has something to play against.

Hand-setting gives individual attention to those settings. For you, the benefit is in the finished arrangement: the alignment of the crystals, the way they’re held and the details you can appreciate up close. A ring should reward a closer look as well as a flattering photo.

We stand behind more than the color

Our plated rings come with a two-year warranty. That’s support for the finish you chose and the workmanship that holds the piece together.

We want you to feel as good about choosing Oomiay after your ring arrives as you did when you found it.

Questions we hear about plated rings

Is gold-plated jewelry worth it?

It depends on what’s under the gold and how much of it there is. Our Heavy Gold+ rings have 2.5 microns of real 18K gold over a silver barrier, with hand-set crystals and a two-year warranty. A ring that doesn’t tell you its thickness is a different purchase.

Are Oomiay rings nickel-free?

Yes. Our plated rings are made without nickel.

What crystals do you use?

Hand-set cubic zirconia, plus glass crystals on some designs for color effects, like the moonstone-effect colors on Bonbon.

How do I keep my ring looking new?

Take it off before showering, swimming or working out, and follow our care guide.
