Jewelry Care

Designed for Everyday Wear.

Oomiay pieces are built for daily life. Our Heavy Gold+ rings use 2.5 microns of real 18K gold over a silver barrier layer with an advanced sealing protection. Our .925 sterling silver pieces are plated with rhodium from the platinum family. Our Black Gold pieces use black rhodium plating on the same construction. All are water-resistant for everyday wear.

That said, the more intentional you are about care, the longer your pieces will look new. Here is a simple 30-second routine.

Do

  • Wear daily. Oomiay pieces are designed for everyday life.
  • Try to remove before swimming, showering, or heavy exercise to maximize lifespan.
  • Apply perfume and lotion before putting on jewelry. Let products absorb into skin first.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. Individual pouches are ideal to prevent scratching between pieces.
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to maintain shine.

Don't

  • Wear daily in pools, hot tubs, or saltwater. Prolonged water exposure shortens plating lifespan.
  • Expose to harsh chemicals: cleaning products, chlorine, bleach.
  • Store in humid environments such as bathrooms.
  • Use ultrasonic cleaners. They are too aggressive for hand-set crystal settings.
  • Sleep in pieces with charms or dangling elements. The pulling motion during sleep stresses delicate settings.

Water Resistance, Honestly

Oomiay pieces are water-resistant for everyday wear, not waterproof. Occasional contact with water (hand washing, rain, the occasional splash) is fine. To prolong the life of your pieces, avoid contact with cleaning agents, beauty products, perfume, and other chemicals where you can.

We say water-resistant because no plated jewelry is genuinely waterproof. Even stainless steel "waterproof" brands' coatings degrade from chlorine, saltwater, and chemicals over time. We chose to keep making interesting, design-forward jewelry and to be honest about the trade-off.

About Sterling Silver and Tarnish

Our sterling silver pieces are plated with rhodium from the platinum family for long-lasting tarnish protection. Rhodium plating is long-lasting but not permanent. With regular wear, the rhodium layer provides strong tarnish protection for years. Over time, some natural wear may occur on high-friction areas. The sterling silver base underneath is itself a genuine precious metal that maintains its beauty.

About Black Gold and Wear Patterns

Black Gold is long-lasting but not permanent. No plated finish is. The dark-to-light transition can show wear sooner at high-contact points (inside of rings, bracelet clasps, chain links that rest against skin) than gold does, simply because the color contrast is starker. With everyday care, a Black Gold piece holds its finish well for the life of the 2-year warranty and typically longer.

About "Green Skin"

If you ever see a faint green mark on your skin from a piece of plated jewelry, it is not an allergic reaction and is not harmful. It happens when copper in brass reacts with more acidic skin oils. It is harmless and washes off. Our 2.5 micron plating plus silver barrier prevents this during normal wear.

The Bottom Line

Everyday life is exactly what these pieces are designed for. Oomiay jewelry is meant to be worn, not stored. The more thoughtful you are with care, the longer they stay looking new. Backed by our 2-year warranty.
