Your Earrings Don’t Need to Fix Your Face

Apparently your earrings have a second job. Before they can be beautiful, they need to make your face more oval.

If your face is round, choose something long. If it’s long, choose something wide. If your jaw has angles, soften them. Somewhere between finding a pair you love and putting them on, you’re supposed to identify a small geometry problem and solve it.

We’d like to release your earrings from that assignment.

There’s nothing wrong with noticing how a shape looks beside your face. There’s something limiting about assuming the goal is always to make your features resemble a different set of features.

Flattering according to whom?

Face-shape guides can offer a useful starting point if you already know the effect you want. A longer line, a rounded outline or a cluster close to the lobe gives the eye something different to work with.

But these guides often smuggle in the desired result. The round face should become longer. The angular face should become softer. The long face should become less long.

What if you like the angles?

What if the long earring is the whole reason you stopped scrolling?

At that point, the advice has stopped helping you choose. It has started choosing the goal for you.

Our preference at Oomiay is to begin with the earring you’re drawn to, then work out what you enjoy about it on you. That leaves much more room for a good discovery.

Try asking what you want people to notice

Our Plaza earrings are exactly what the charts love to forbid: a bezel-set crystal at the lobe, a chunky twisted gold link, and another crystal swinging at the bottom, just over an inch long in all. If your face is long, a chart would tell you to skip them.

We’d tell you to try them with your hair back and see who wins.

The Gold Emerald Cut Huggies offer a different starting point: a beaded huggie with an emerald-cut crystal charm. The more concentrated arrangement lets the rectangular crystal be the thing you notice.

Choosing between them can be a question of mood, detail and the amount of earring you want visible. Those are useful distinctions. They tell you what you’re buying.

“Your face is the wrong shape for this” tells you much less.

At that point, the advice has stopped helping you choose. It has started choosing the goal for you.

There is more around your earrings than your face

Hair makes a difference to how much of an earring you see. A piece that peeks through loose hair can become a much clearer outline when the hair is tucked back.

A collar can crowd the space beneath a drop. An open neckline can leave that same space available. Your other earrings can make one pair feel like the lead or part of a fuller arrangement.

These are things you can actually change while trying a piece.

So look at it with your hair the way you normally wear it. Turn your head. Notice where it finishes. See whether the details remain visible and whether that’s what you want. Try the outfit you had in mind rather than grading an isolated pair against a face-shape chart.

You might decide the shorter earring is better. You might discover that the longer one is exactly right. Either result is more satisfying when you know why.

Your features can stay

We make earrings with details worth wanting: a considered cluster, a crystal shape, a hoop that develops into something less expected.

Their job is to give you something lovely to work with. They can frame your face, draw attention around it, or simply become a part of your appearance you enjoy.

They don’t need to explain what was wrong before they arrived. Nothing was.

Start with the pair you keep coming back to. Your face is welcome as it is.
