A row of Oomiay hoops with dangling charms

The Plain Hoop Has Had Its Turn

There’s nothing wrong with a beautiful plain hoop. We just don’t think the hoop needs another lifetime achievement award.

The same goes for a simple band, a neat solitaire and a small pendant on a chain. They have earned their places. They are familiar for good reasons.

But familiarity can become a very comfortable place to stop designing. Change the size a little. Round the edge. Call it a modern classic. Sometimes the result is lovely. Sometimes you have scrolled past six versions and can’t remember which one you liked.

At Oomiay, we want another idea to enter the picture.

A familiar shape can be the beginning

A ring doesn’t have to organize itself around one stone in the middle.

It can have linked details, a tiny constellation, two bands that do different things. It can arrange its crystals somewhere unexpected. A charm can become part of the composition rather than a small souvenir added afterward.

Look at Champagne. The linked detail, pavé crystals and bezel-set star give the band several things to say. The star is a shape you know. What makes the ring is everything around it: that crisp little outline next to the texture and sparkle of the band.

You don’t have to be collecting celestial symbolism to like it. You might simply love that particular star in that particular place.

That’s often how attachment starts. You notice a detail, keep looking at it, and eventually find that a more conventional version feels as though something is missing.

The hoop can have a second thought

Our Prism earrings start with the recognizability of hoops and build a different composition beneath them. Pavé, a crescent moon and a small bezel star sit together in a way that’s more elaborate than a single drop, without asking the whole earring to become enormous.

The circle is still there. It has company.

This is what we enjoy about designing around familiar forms. There’s already something for the eye to recognize, which leaves room for another detail to surprise it. You get the ease of understanding what a piece is and the pleasure of finding out what else it does.

The design doesn’t become better simply because it has more components. Each one needs a reason to be there. Remove the crescent and the arrangement changes. Make the star much larger and it changes again. That’s where the design actually happens.

A collection can keep exploring that territory. The newer Vesper earrings, with their stacked hoops and mixed celestial and crystal charms, take a fuller approach. They offer another mood rather than one compulsory idea of what a dangle earring should be.

The fun part deserves the attention

There’s a strange tendency to treat imaginative jewelry as the carefree end of the category, as if the design can compensate for indifferent workmanship.

We think the more specific the arrangement, the more satisfying it should be up close. The crystals are hand-set across these Oomiay designs. Their placement is part of the piece you fell for, so that work belongs in the pleasure of owning it.

You should be able to enjoy a playful shape and still care about how it’s made. A star doesn’t cancel your standards. Neither does a ring with more going on than a center stone.

Leave room for the next favorite

The classics will manage. Nobody is taking away your plain hoops.

We’re interested in what happens after them. The ring that makes an unexpected shape feel completely right. The earring you recognize before you remember its name. Your next favorite is probably something you haven’t seen yet, so go see what’s new.
