Somewhere right now, a website is telling you that a ring on your middle finger means you're "balanced." We went looking for who decided that. The answer, mostly, is nobody.
Some finger meanings come from real history. Most come from palm readers, and palmistry is folklore, not science. So here's every finger: what tradition (and the occasional ancient playwright) said it meant, our verdict, and a ring that suits it.

The thumb
What they said: thumb rings started as gear. Archers wore them to protect the thumb while drawing a bowstring, and in ancient China jade thumb rings signaled military rank. Palmistry is less flattering. An 1895 palm-reading manual, Mrs. J. B. Dale's Indian Palmistry, reads the pad at the base of the thumb as "love of beauty and pleasure," and when it's large, "inconstancy, coquetry." The same book says a line circling the thumb is "an indication of hanging." (A crease, not a ring. We checked.)
Our verdict: the thumb is the boldest spot on your hand, so go big. Cage ($79) is two gold loops gripping a ribbed silver-tone center, sculptural enough to hold its own there. Thumbs run larger than other fingers, so measure yours first; Cage goes up to size 11.
The index finger
What they said: palm readers call the base of the index finger the Mount of Jupiter: ambition and success, or "pride, tyranny" if it's too pronounced. History gives it a bigger job. In a traditional Jewish wedding, the groom places the ring on the bride's index finger, partly so she can show it to the witnesses.
Our verdict: it's the finger you point with, so a ring here gets seen every time you make a point. Country Club ($69) sets a deep green crystal in a cluster of white ones on a curved gold band. Ambitious, as required.
The middle finger
What they said: palmistry gives it Saturn: "wisdom, prudence," or "taciturnity, sadness" if overdone. The Romans had a blunter name for it, digitus impudicus, the shameless finger, and the gesture it's famous for goes back at least to Aristophanes in 423 BC.
Our verdict: it's the longest finger and the center of your hand, which makes it the natural home for your biggest ring. It could also use some good press. Put a flower on it: Eden ($94) sets a bezel flower of white crystals on a chunky sterling silver band.
The ring finger
What they said: the left one carries the wedding ring in much of the world, so everyone knows that story. The right one has a newer one. In 2003 a diamond campaign gave it a slogan of its own: "Your left hand says 'We.' Your right hand says 'Me.'" Palm readers, meanwhile, give the ring finger the Sun: "art, genius, intelligence," unless that pad is very full, in which case it means "a greedy and untruthful disposition."
Our verdict: the right one is yours, no proposal needed. Nutcracker ($69) has the outline of an engagement ring, a pear crystal held up on prongs with tiny white crystals trailing down the band, in a soft pink that's entirely for you. Need permission? Buy the ring, skip the proposal.
The middle finger has had 2,400 years of bad press. A flower helps.
The pinky
What they said: palmistry assigns it Mercury: "science, inventiveness, wit," or, when the pad below it is very large, "theft, lying, cunning." The pinky swear is darker than it sounds. It comes from Japan's yubikiri, which translates to "finger cut-off," and the traditional vow ends with the liar swallowing a thousand needles.
Our verdict: it's the finger with no rules, and we've made our full case for the pinky ring already. Start with Doodle ($65), two round white crystals on a wavy gold band, in sizes from 4.
“Love this ring, cool and unique but still dainty! Wish I got in a bigger size, I got it for my pinky but now I want it for my middle or index finger also!”
The only meaning that counts
Every finger comes with a tradition, a palm reader and an opinion. None of them were there when you picked the ring. Almost every Oomiay design comes in sizes 4 to 11, so any of them can go on any finger you like.
The best finger for a ring is the one you catch yourself looking at.

Questions about what each finger means
What does a ring on the thumb mean?
Historically, thumb rings protected archers' thumbs and, in some cultures, signaled rank. Today a thumb ring doesn't carry a fixed meaning; most people wear one because it's a bold, visible spot for a statement ring.
What does a ring on the index finger mean?
In palmistry the index finger is linked to ambition and leadership. In traditional Jewish weddings the ring is placed on the bride's index finger. Otherwise, it's simply a highly visible place for a ring.
What does a ring on the middle finger mean?
Palm readers associate the middle finger with wisdom and caution, but there's no fixed meaning. As the longest and most central finger, it suits a larger statement ring.
What does a ring on the right ring finger mean?
In many countries the left ring finger holds a wedding ring, so a ring on the right ring finger usually means nothing more than "I liked it." The "right-hand ring" was popularized by a 2003 diamond ad campaign aimed at women buying for themselves.
